Scottish pubs gear up for World Cup return with new guidance
With less than a month until the FIFA World Cup kicks off on 11 June 2026, Scotland’s pubs are preparing to welcome fans for the nation’s first appearance at the finals in 28 years.
To help venues get ready, the Scottish Beer & Pub Association (SBPA) has released updated operational guidance aimed at supporting licensees in delivering a safe and enjoyable tournament experience. The competition will run through to 19 July.
The guidance brings together practical advice on key areas including licensing requirements, staffing levels, managing high-demand matchdays and maintaining safe environments for customers. It also highlights the importance of early planning and coordination with local authorities and police, and includes a summary of licensing approaches across Scotland’s regional boards.
Developed in partnership with Police Scotland and backed by a range of industry bodies — including Best Bar None Scotland, BII Scotland, the Night Time Industries Association and UKHospitality Scotland — the document encourages close collaboration between pubs, licensing authorities and law enforcement.
SBPA spokesperson Paul Togneri described the tournament as a “landmark moment” for Scottish football and the hospitality sector.
“This summer’s World Cup is Scotland’s first finals since 1998, and pubs will be at the heart of how fans come together to enjoy it. We want as many people as possible to have a brilliant time in their local, and that means planning ahead,” he said.
He added that the guidance is designed to provide “practical, Scotland-focused support” and urged operators to engage early with Licensing Standards Officers and Police Scotland to ensure a coordinated approach. https://admin.beerandpub.com/media/1n4fprjp/fifa-world-cup-guidance-sco-21-may-26-fnl.pdf
