Best Bar None

Championing Best Practice in your Community.

Best Bar None (BBN) is a national awards scheme which champions best practice in the day and night time economy.  Currently there are over 400 Best Bar None venues in 58 towns, cities and villages across Scotland. The scheme has been operating in Scotland since 2005 and was launched initially in Glasgow city centre to promote partnership working and encourage positive management practices in pubs, bars, clubs and entertainment venues.

In the last 12 year years the scheme has grown considerably and there are currently 22 locally coordinated Best Bar None schemes from Inverness to the Scottish Borders. Our ambition is to have a BBN presence in every Local Authority area and create real safe social hubs in communities across Scotland.

Venues participate in an annual assessment and evidence their increased standards of management and training for staff, aligned with national licensing objectives and nationally set policies and procedures. However we ask so much more of the venues and really encourage innovation, community engagement and social responsibility.

Core to the ethos of the scheme is Scottish Government’s Building Safer Communities (BSC) Programme which supports safe and resilient communities through prevention of crime, disorder and alcohol related vulnerability.

Harm prevention is also one of our key outcomes and working with pubs, bars and venues to promote duty of care for their customers is fundamental. This year we have also introduced criteria for the Out of Hospital Cardiac Arrest Programme and our Best Bar None venues are now receiving Bystander CPR training to support their Communities.

Our very close partners in making Best Bar None a success are Police Scotland, Scottish Government, Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, Scottish Licensed Trade Association and of course the Local Coordinators who represent Community Safety, Trading standards and Business Improvement Districts. They work with local priorities to make the day and night time economy a truly great environment in which to socialise on your doorstep.

Best Bar None’s journey has continued to ensure that protecting vulnerable persons is a priority as evidenced by the launch in August 2016 of our “Good night out…?” Film, which follows Amy, Graham and Laura on a night out – to watch their evening unfold Click this link to the BBN website https://www.bbnscotland.co.uk/good-night-out-campaign/ and you decide, is this a Good Night Out?

Ambition for 2017/18 sees us moving BBN into the airport environment, the launch of a new strategy with messaging to secure additional funding and partnership support to allow BBN to develop on its journey and Raise the Bar into new areas across Scotland and continue to deliver BSC priorities working with local and national partners.

Funding partners DIAGEO, Molson Coors, HEINEKEN, Maxxium, Tennent’s and Chivas Brothers-Pernod Ricard support our work and contribute to a very ambitious initiative which drives sustainable change in the licensed trade. Our focus for the next 12 months will be to ensure positive messages are reaching our communities about the commitment of our Best Bar None venues in support of a friendly, safe environment to socialise with your family and friends and encourage our communities to flourish.
